Gouty and Back Pain

Gouty arthritis causes back pain, since it affects the joints. Gouty arthritis is a joint disease, which inflammation causes deposits of uric (Acid in the urine) acid crystals. The acids are slightly soluble, which are present in blood and urine. The acids are produced by breakdowns of body waste known as nitrogenous matters, or substances.

Aspirin is prescribed, as well as NSAIDs to reduce the pain. The doctor often prescribes Motrin, Ibuprofen, Flurbiprofen, Naproxen, Piroxicam, and so on.

The diet must be maintained, as well the patient should increase fluid intake up to three quarts daily. Types Of Dental Sedation

Oral Sedation
Medication such as Valium, Xanax, or Halcion is given to the patient the night before the appointment with a second dose about one hour before seeing the dentist. This helps relaxation and the patient remains awake and able to follow instructions. A local anesthetic is given so there is no pain at the site for the dental work.

Nitrous Oxide – “Laughing Gas”
This gas reduces anxiety and helps the patient become calm and relaxed. This is most effective when given to patients who have mild anxiety but will be having a relatively short, uncomplicated dental procedure. Gas is administered with a mask and local anesthesia is also used.

Intravenous Conscious Sedation
A medication is injected into a vein to produce a lowered state of consciousness. The patient can not smell, feel, or taste. Because there are different levels of sedation, a local anesthetic may be used in conjunction..  The patient’s blood pressure, pulse and heart rate are monitored as well as respiration rate. The level of oxygen in the patient’s blood is also observed closely. Sedation dentist are specially trained in dental anesthesia.

Deep Intravenous Sedation
This is a state that is between IV Conscious Sedation and Unconscious Dental Sedation. The patient is not able to respond to questions or follow simple instructions. These patients must be monitored closely and the blood pressure, heart and pulse rate are watched closely as well as their respiratory status. Advanced training is required to administer this type of dental anesthesia.

When the dental procedures are completed patients are observed closely until they are fully awake and their vital signs are stable. Dental sedation provides a way for patients with a high level of fear, as well as other problems, to have dental procedures carried out with relative ease.

Type 2 Diabetes is Increasing in Our Children!

Type 2 diabetes in children is one of the most challenging experiences for both the child with this chronic condition, as well as the parents and family. This form of diabetes is more commonly associated with adults but now is on the increase in children, fueled mainly by the obesity crisis.

Keeping an eye out for these symptoms as this means diagnosis and treatment can commence as swiftly as possible.  The presence of this condition exposes children to decades of damage from elevated blood sugar levels.

Type 2 can be managed successfully through:

  • regular activity to help stabilize blood glucose levels
  • a healthy eating plan to minimize or prevent the progression or development of health complications and to help with weight loss
  • medication, including insulin-injections for some children

Whether insulin-injections are needed or not depends on how high the blood sugar levels are when this condition is diagnosed.  Insulin is often the first choice because most of the oral blood glucose lowering medications have not been tested in children.  Although metformin is prescribed for children in some countries.

In spite of all the challenges that type 2 diabetes poses, with the right treatment, a young child can still go about life with relative ease. It can be a stressful time for parents and family and this is where your Health Care Provider can be very helpful.  He can also give you information about diabetes camps that are run by various organizations; your children can have fun at camp while learning about looking after themselves.

Treatment is really a family business when a child is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.  Family members need  to be educated and learn how to give injections and check blood sugar levels.  Also to understand the importance of why a healthy eating plan together with increased physical activity is necessary to improve insulin-resistance and reduce health complications in all family members.
